 S&S replacement pinion gears for late 1977 and up big twin Harley-Davidson motorcycles are carefully machined, heat treated and then finish ground. Green color code pinion gears measure 1.4715§-1.4721§ over .105§ pins for cam gears that measure 2.7374§-2.7384§ over .105§ pins.

There are three distinct year groups in eight different color-coded sizes for optimum gear lash available for big twin engines. The S&S color codes match Harley-Davidson color codes so replacement is easy. S&S does not offer a replacement pinion shaft for 1990-99 big twin engines that accepts a stock pinion gear, oil pump drive gear, gear spacer and pinion gear nut, because experience has shown that the design is not strong enough for performance applications. For this reason, we recommend and sell only the pre-1990 style pinion shaft for big twins. To make the change easier, S&S offers a conversion package consisting of a pinion gear, spacer, nut and oil pump drive gear for big twin engines.
